Mike Bagshaw

Michael Bagshaw is visiting Professor of Aviation Medicine at King’s College London and visiting Professor at Cranfield University.

After 16 years in the Royal Air Force as a medical officer, Hunter and Jaguar pilot, flying instructor and test pilot, he worked as an NHS consultant neuro-otologist at St George’s Hospital and a GP in Berkshire. Mike then spent 12 years as Head of Medical Services for British Airways before becoming Director of Aviation Medicine at King’s College London, retiring in 2008.

He holds an Airline Transport Pilots Licence, and is a flight instructor and examiner. Dr Bagshaw flies his own Twin Comanche aircraft and is recognised as an authority on neuro-otology and human factors in aviation.

Past-President of the Aerospace Medical Association and the Airlines Medical Directors Association, Professor Bagshaw has published more than 100 scientific papers. Author of ‘Human Performance and Limitations in Aviation’ and contributor to the major textbooks, he has received many international honours and awards. He was a member of the team which introduced Crew Resource Management and human factors training to British Airways flight-crew. He is Honorary Civilian Consultant Adviser in Aviation Medicine to the British Army, Aeromedical Adviser to Airbus, and Associate Director of Jarvis Bagshaw Ltd, consultants in flight safety and human factors, as well as being Chairman of the General Aviation Safety Council.
