New CASE Medicine member Dr Matt Wilkes and his team have recently launched their website for their new research project.

The Free Flight Physiology project will measure the baseline physiology of paraglider pilots when in flight. Measurements including heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, accelerometry and oxygen saturation will be taken. They will focus on pilots from elite athletes flying in Karakorum to regular pilots flying in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders.

Paragliding has become a very popular sport over the last 40 years, with an estimated 127,000 active pilots in the world. Flights of over 100km are made regularly, using soaring lift and thermal updraft.

Once this information has been obtained, the team will use this data to stimulate paragliding conditions in safe conditions to undertake tests of performance, looking at cognition (decision making) and safety.

It is hoped the data will help to influence further research into this area and also help to establish systems that can help prevent injury or loss of life.

We will also be keeping you updated on the project via the CASE website and Twitter feed.
